Educational Theory and Practice
Educational theory and practice explores how educational research and inquiry can contribute to social and environmental change.
Faculty members in ETAP include researchers, theorists and philosophers critically engaged with curriculum, instructional design, teaching and learning, program development, policy analysis and systems change. Their work uses conceptual, philosophical and empirical methodologies to explore how educational settings can foster learning, engagement, equity, accessibility, creativity, belonging and meaningful social and environmental change, while also interrogating the ways education reproduces systemic inequalities.
You may wish to focus on ETAP if your goal is to advance research, shape educational policy and programs, lead change in educational settings, interrogate professional practice or rethink learning itself.
As a doctoral student focused on ETAP, you will expand your understanding of the complexities of formal and informal educational contexts such as K–12 schooling, adult education, post-secondary education, museums, community-based learning and cultural and community-based organizations. You will also benefit from a conceptual space for research, inquiry, innovation and transformation. You will grapple with complex questions about the individual, cultural, social, historical, political and environmental dimensions of education as you learn alongside scholars, educators and community leaders committed to building more just and inclusive futures.
