Kye Emond

Mathematical Physics Honours

I am working on a project "Using Deep Neural Networks to Find New Physics in Higgs Boson Decays" where I train AIs to identify possible modifications to the Standard Model by using simulated data.

Why did you choose to come to SFU?

SFU was a local university with a respected physics department, and the school offered to pay for my classes

How would you describe your research or program to a family member?

I would describe my research as "Training AIs to figure out new theories of physics". I would describe my program as "Learning to predict the future with math"

What are you particularly enjoying about your studies/research at SFU?

I've really been enjoying learning rigorous, abstract mathematics in my classes, then finding ways to actually apply those concepts to my research.

What advice would you give a student who is considering getting involved in undergraduate research?

Get very adept at programming, ideally by working on a project that interests you such as developing a game or building an app. Programming has been the main skill I've used in all of my research positions so far.
