Award winners!
Here are the latest recipients of some of the Awards & Scholarships that the SCA is able to award, as well as the latest recipients of the SCA Service Awards. First, these are Awards & Scholarships recipients: the Liam Murley (RedFM 93.1 Music Scholarship), Sana Goel (Dr. Tashakkor Undergraduate Award in Contemporary Arts), Emma Patience Campbell (Serein Properties Visual Arts Award), and Caroline Chernega (Bob Rennie Undergraduate Award in Visual Arts). And second, these are the SCA Service Awards recipients: Czarina Marie Agustines, Seyedeh Samira Bani, Kady Brandel, Graysen Braun, Artemis Cheung, Emma Ciprian, Sana Goel (again!), Brennan Henderson, Jillian Jarin, Sonja Kwantes, Carlo Marchet, Bethlehem Mulat, Arisa Nagayama, Camila Rueda Furuzawa, Elijah Sam, Terris Tan, Jeya Thiessen, Jenny Yu, Luvz de Guzman, Marielle de Menezes, Sara van Gaalen, and Clara Xu. Marks update
The SCA's Laura U. Marks joined SCA alumnus Juan Manuel Sepulvéda virtually to talk about Small File video and the carbon footprint of streaming on April 8, 2025, presented by the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Next, Marks will be a juror (non-virtual!) for the Saudi Film Festival in Dammam, which runs April 17 – 23, 2025. More HERE.
Johal asks, What Kind of University Do We Want?
Am Johal, an SCA Associate Faculty Member and former Director of SFU's Vancity Office of Community Engagement (since closed by SFU), is giving the 2025 Buttedahl Memorial Lecture, appropriately titled "What Kind of University Do We Want?: In Defense of University-Community Engagement," on April 30 at 2:00 PM in UBC's Ponderosa Ballroom (6445 University Boulevard, Vancouver), presented by UBC's Department of Educational Studies. Drawing on the works of Rotimi Fani-Kayode, René Peña, and George Dureau, SCA alumnus Olumoroti Soji-George is giving a talk, If Beauty Is The Mother Of Pathology, What Is Desire?, on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at 7:00 PM at The Polygon Gallery (101 Carrie Cates Ct, North Vancouver), presented in support of the exhibition Rotimi Fani-Kayode: Tranquility Of Communion, which runs to May 25, 2025, and in partnership with the Black Arts Centre. Ariaratnam, cellist
After a year studying with cellist Marina Hasselberg, SCA alumnus Matthew Ariaratnam is having his first concert on cello on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at 8:00 PM at 8EAST (8 E. Pender St., Vancouver). Also performing are Hasselberg (cello), Haley Bird (oboe), Madeleine Elkins (guitar), and SCA student Aidan Edwards (clarinet). More HERE.

Issue 4.4: Speculative Feminisms
The Capilano Review, which has SCA alumnus Jacquelyn Zong-Li Ross as Art Editor, has announced "Issue 4.4: Speculative Feminisms," their Spring 2025 issue, which "reflects on the notion of the speculative as a site of resistance and hope, turning specifically to the potential of feminist worlds and modes of being to create real forms of political resistance and solidarity." Kong curates for Who Roams the Earth
SCA alumnus Yani Kong collaborated with Cinevolution Media Arts to curate Who Roams the Earth, a full day of free screenings in celebration of National Canadian Film Day, on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at the Richmond Cultural Centre (7700 Minoru Gate, Richmond). As Kong tells us, "This year’s program is both a foray into filmmaking in Canada, and a cinematic journey into living worlds beyond the human universe, from alpine pastures to desert skies to otherworldly perspectives." Agustines' Quarter Six

Talking and Dancing with Tara Cheyenne
There's still time to register for SCA MFA student Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg (Tara Cheyenne Performance) "Talking and Dancing" workshop on April 12 & 13, 2025, from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM in our studios here at 149 W. Hastings St., Vancouver. Not only does Friedenberg have significant practical experience as a performer, show producer, running a company, and podcast host, she is also smart and genuinely funny. Esprit Orchestra plays O'Callaghan

SCA alumni Elizabeth Milton, Lucien Durey, and Steve Hubert and SCA PhD student Jess MacCormack and SCA MA student Katie Belcher have all donated work to the online and in-person art auction ART FOR G<3ZA.
