Louise Bentall Award for Emerging B.C. Choreographers

Created in memory of Louise Bentall, a long-time board member of DanceHouse and SCA alumnus who was dedicated to local arts and culture and other charitable work who passed in 2017, DanceHouse and the Hawthorne Foundation have launched the Louise Bentall Award for Emerging B.C. Choreographers. With a value of $10,000, the award is open to "individual emerging dance artists working in all styles of dance, including collaborative and/or multidisciplinary projects" (not including students, companies, collectives, or organizations). Applications are due March 15, 2023, and the inaugural winner will be announced May 5, 2023. Read more from Stir Vancouver.

I had a dream about this place makes the list

Generally speaking, Bandcamp's year end lists are packed full of solid picks that deserve a listen or two – or more! Their Best Contemporary Classical of 2022, for example, is no exception. And in fact, this list includes NO HAY BANDA's I had a dream about this place, which includes works by the SCA's Sabrina Schroeder and Mauricio Pauly, along with works by Anthony Tan and Andrea Young. Dongnier at CultureHub NYC

The SCA's NiNi Dongnier performed her work-in-progress, Compound Rite: Utopia or Oblivion, on Friday, December 16, 2022, at CultureHub (47 Great Jones St.). More HERE.

Rodriguez does STRUCK

The SCA's Wladimiro A. Woyno Rodriguez is doing the Video/Projection Design for Ghost River Theatre's STRUCK, which is having its World Premiere at Calgary's West Village Theatre from January 31 – February 11, 2023. Watch a trailer HERE.

Matreyek and more in PushOFF 2023

Just announced! PushOFF 2023: Emergent Realities, running January 30 – February 4, 2023, at The Russian Hall (600 Campbell Ave., Vancouver) and online at www.pushoff.org, co-presented by Theatre Replacement and Company 605. The whole set of programming looks great, but we're especially happy to see the SCA folks in the lineup: New Age Attitudes: Live in Concert by alumnus Amanda Sum, Kisiskâciwan by alumnus Jeanette Kotowich, Infinitely Yours by the SCA's Miwa Matreyek, and in-development works by alumni Adrienne Wong (Victoria, BC), Natalie Tin Yin Gan, and Luciana Freire D'Anunciação.

Slade at the closing

If you haven't seen it yet, consider checking out I have forgotten my umbrella, with SCA alumni A. Branch, Sena Cleave, and Vitória Monteiro, at the Monica Reyes Gallery (602 E Hastings St., Vancouver) between 11:00 PM – 4:00 PM on Saturday, December 17, 2022, that last day of the exhibition, because the SCA's Kathy Slade, who curated the show, will be at the gallery and happy to talk up the work.

SCA in Sound Space

Here's the The Georgia Straight on the New Forms Media Society and Lobe Studio's Sound Space series, running December 14 – 18, 2022, at Performance Works (1218 Cartwright St., Vancouver), which includes the SCA's Stefan Maier, SCA alumnus and current PhD student Dave Biddle, and SCA alumni Scott Morgan / Loscil and Jean Brazeau in the programming. Kanagawa rehearsing Forgiveness

Rehearsals have begun for SCA alumnus Hiro Kanagawa's adaptation of Mark Sakamoto's memoir Forgiveness, featuring SCA alumnus June Fukumura in the cast, which is having its World Premiere from January 12 – February 12, 2023, at the Arts Club Theatre Company's Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage (2750 Granville Street, Vancouver), a joint production with Theatre Calgary, who will be presenting the show from March 7 – April 1, 2023.

Whistler Film Festival online

If you were unable to attend the 2022 Whistler Film Festival, you can still catch some of the films in the festival online, including SCA alumni Gloria Mercer and Aidan West's Smoke Eater and Irina Lord's Soft-Spoken Weepy Cult Child.

Triana in DADAO

SCA alumnus Jhoely Triana is participating in Dance West Network's 8th annual DADAO, Des Arts Dehors / Arts Outside. More HERE.

In conversation with SCA student host Zoë Braithwaite, the one and only Howard Dai is the guest on the latest episode on After School, the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology produced podcast that features FCAT alumni in conversation with FCAT students, including from the SCA. SCA alumnus James O'Callaghan gets a good shout out about the upcoming premiere of his work, OVERBOUND, featuring soloist Cameron Crozman, which is part of 21C Esprit Orchestra presents: Taiko Live! on January 25, 2023, at 8:00 PM at Toronto's Koerner Hall ( 273 Bloor St. W), presented as part of the 21C Music Festival. Winter/Spring at The Cultch

The Cultch have announced their winter '22 / spring '23 season, which includes My Little Tomato, co-directed by SCA alumni Derek Chan and Cameron Mackenzie, running March 9 – 19, co-produced by Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre (VACT), which Chan is Managing Artistic Director for, and Zee Zee Theatre, in association with rice & beans theatre (which Chan co-founded with SCA alumnus Pedro Chamale); SCA alumnus Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg's Body Parts, running May 3 – 6; and SCA alumnus Amanda Sum's New Age Attitudes: Live in Concert, directed by SCA alumnus and Theatre Replacement Artistic Director Maiko Yamamoto, running May 11 – 14.
