Rodriguez at the Prague Quadrennial

The SCA's Wlad Antonio Woyno Rodriguez and Carmen Alatorre are co-curators of A Carrying Vessel, which is the Canadian exhibit in the Prague Quadrennial Exhibition of Countries and Regions, running June 8 – 18, 2023. Seeking to foster "new artistic life" from "the slow decay of traditional colonial theatre," Rodriguez and Alatorre are presenting a "designer’s studio, housed in a brutalist cube in ruins, from which new life will temporarily spring in the form of time-based artistic micro-interventions," featuring participation by Samira Banihashemi, Samay Arcentales Cajas, Jay Havens, Whittyn Jason, and SCA alumnus Nancy Tam. Book launch and conversation with Yoon and Ramsey

The SCA's Jin-me Yoon will be in conversation with SCA alumnus and The Polygon Gallery Curator Elliott Ramsey on June 8, 2023, from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM in celebration of the release of her new book, co-published by Steidl and the Scotiabank Photography Award. More HERE.

The SCA's Laura U. Marks is one of the keynote speakers at the Society for Animation Studies' 34th Annual Conference, with the theme The Animated Environment, which runs June 12 – 16, 2023, at Rowan University (201 Mullica Hill Road, Glassboro, New Jersey). More HERE.

Matreyek in Earmarked for Collision and at Zagreb

The SCA's Miwa Matreyek is profiled in Earmarked for Collision: A Highly Biased Tour of Collage Animation by Chris Robinson, who's the programmer at Ottawa Animation Festival, which is out now on Routledge. More HERE. Also, Matreyek's Digitopia is screening at Animafest Zagreb, which June 5 to 10, 2023, in Zagreb, Croatia.

Through My Lens and asses.masses in FOLDA

Through My Lens by Amy Amantea and the SCA's James Long (Theatre Replacement) is part of Folda: Festival of Live Digital Art, running June 7 – 10, 2023, at various times in the Gordon Vogt Film Screening Room at the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts (390 King St. W., Kingston). Pride Month

While Vancouver's Pride events, like the Vancouver Pride Festival, take place in August, June is Pride Month in recognition of the Stonewall riots / uprising / rebellion on June 28, 1969, in NYC. National Indigenous Peoples Month

June is National Indigenous Peoples Month! SFU has shared a number of events scheduled to mark the occasion – see them HERE. Silverfox​ in the NGC permanent collection and in Coming into Sight

Click through (HERE) to see the three works – All that Glitters is not Gold…, Copper + Concrete, and Landmarks – by SCA alumnus Krystle Silverfox​ that have been added to the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Canada​. Silverfox will also be part of the exhibition, Coming into Sight: 50th Anniversary Art Bank Acquisitions, which runs June 20, 2023 – May 20, 2024, in the Âjagemô art space at the Canada Council for the Arts (150 Elgin St., Ottawa, ON). Talking Stick Festival

Great to see Talking Stick Festival coming back to SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts in celebration of National Indigenous History Month, with several events presented with our colleagues SFU Woodward's. While taking place at Lobe Studio (713 E. Hastings St., Vancouver), not here at the GCA, SCA alumnus Lisa Cooke Ravensbergen's "spatial sound" work The Seventh Fire, which is also part of the Festival, runs June 27 – July 4. More HERE.

Joy of Jigging and Confluence at Evergreen

SCA alumnus Jeanette Kotowich​ is presenting a Joy of Jigging Workshop on Sunday, June 18, 2023, from 2:30 PM – 4:00 PM in the Rehearsal Hall at the Evergreen Cultural Centre​ (1205 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam). Also, Raven Spirit Dance​, which has SCA alumnus Starr Muranko as co-Artistic Director (with Michelle Olson) and Kotowich as an Artistic Associate, are presenting Confluence on Monday, June 19, at 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM in the Evergreen Cultural Centre's Studio Theatre.

Attention filmmaking youth! The City of North Vancouver has a bursary for The Cinematheque's 2023 Cinelab, a "two-week long summer filmmaking program for aspiring artists aged 14–19," which we're co-presenting. The application deadline is June 16. More HERE.

ONLINE, "an interactive livestream Clown-Drag-Karaoke Extravaganza," is part of Upintheair Theatre's rEvolver Festival, which also includes Pulsive Party's (aka SCA alumnus Natalie Tin Yin Gan & Ashley Whitehead) Lip Service: Breaking down barriers, SCA alumni Anthony Kit Chun Lee's Discounted Hotpot Centre, and SCA alumnus Jordyn Wood's Vascular Necrosis (as part of the Updrafts Reading Series) in the programming.
