Also, not only is Theatre Replacement's Artistic Director SCA alumnus Maiko Yamamoto (who Van Mag included in their 2025 Power 50 list), but there's also a few SCA folks behind the scenes (and on keys!), including Pedro Chamale (Co-Writer, with Marcus Youssef), Cindy Mochizuki (Scenic Illustration), Sophie Tang (Lighting Design and Apprentice Stage Manager), Daniel O’Shea (Technical Director), and Jami Reimer (alternating nights on keys with Veda Hille). Stir on the new cuts
Stir shared about the new "austerity budget" from the City of Vancouver, which will reduce arts funding in the city by 12 percent (approximately 6 million), as well as reduce funding for other much needed civic services and spaces. Read it HERE. Meanwhile, the Vancouver city police will receive $50 million more for their budget, which was already boosted in the previous budget. And yet, somehow property taxes will be frozen, even though, according to Forbes, Vancouver already has the lowest property taxes in Canada. Affordability is an enduring problem in the Lower Mainland, to be sure, especially (but not only) in Vancouver, which is significantly tied to the financialization of housing and inflated property values. Nevertheless, there are solid numbers that demonstrate the value of supporting the arts. Some members of city council might properly consider reviewing the report shared by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, which concludes that the "Arts and Culture Sector Contributes $131 Billion to Canada’s Economy." Seems like a worthwhile "investment" (to use their language) to us! Furthermore, a thriving Arts and Culture Sector fosters considerable knock-on economic value, too, from the innumerable other small business that directly provide goods and services to the sector, to audiences going to bars and restaurants and using whatever else they might use when they're out to see an event or exhibition.
