Ng's Music in My Eyes

SCA alumnus Silas Ng's work Music in My Eyes is on the windows of the Art Gallery at Evergreen until September, 2024, presented as part of the 2024 Capture Photography Festival Selected Exhibition Program. Ng will also be giving an artist talk on Friday, March 22, at 5:00 PM (1205 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam). More HERE.

Yoon and Sound in Otherwise Disregarded

The SCA's Jin-me Yoon and SCA alumnus Michelle Sound join Adad Hannah and Jake Kimble in Otherwise Disregarded, which runs April 20 – September 29, 2024⁠, at the Audain Art Museum (4350 Blackcomb Way, Whistler), co-presented by the Audain Art Museum and the Capture Photography Festival, for which Otherwise Disregarded is a Featured Exhibition in the 2024 edition of the Festival.⁠ More HERE. Garay in Shared Ground

Shihab in Sound Politics

The SCA's Nadia Shihab will is presenting on "sound as a critical intervention in her work" as part of Sound Politics on March 22, 2024, at 11:00 AM (EST), presented by the Collective for Multimodal Makers, Publishers, Collaborators, and Teachers (COMMPCT), a new initiative of the Society for Visual Anthropology. Johal and Hern talk O My Friends

SCA Associate Member Am Johal, who's also the Director of SFU's Vancity Office of Community Engagement, and Matt Hern were on CBC Radio's The Early Edition to talk about their new collaborative book, O My Friends, There is No Friend: The Politics of Friendship at the End of Ecology, which is out now from transcript Verlag. 60 Minute Performance Challenge

The SCA Theatre Student Union is presenting the 60 Minute Performance Challenge on March 20, 2024, at 6:00 PM in the 4th Floor "theatre lounge" here at 149 W. Hastings St., Vancouver. The Challenge asks groups of 4 students to create 5 minute performances in 60 minutes in any style or medium, but based off a prompt. Prizes will be awarded by TSU. More HERE.

RIP, Yong Soon Min

Very sad news to learn of the too-early passing of Yong Soon Min, who was an Audain Visual Artist-in-Residence in 2016 here at the SCA, working with the SCA's Jin-me Yoon and visual art students to produce the exhibition Dear Leader, What I Love . . ., which ran March 24 – April 2 at SFU Galleries' Audain Gallery, and participating in a number of other activities. Kozak and Durey talk Covers

SCA alumni Katie Kozak and Lucien Durey are giving an artist talk on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at 12:00 PM via Zoom for the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery. They'll address Covers (2023), their work in the exhibition Aporia (Notes to a Medium), which is at the Belkin until April 14, 2024. RSVP HERE. Also: we missed this the first time around, check out this installation image (by Blaine Campbell) of SCA alumnus Durey's GO FOR THE SUN (2023), "a porcelain penny round tile mural" installed in the lobby of Vancouver's Lumbermen’s Building (509 Richards St.). As Durey explains, "The phrase references a 1985 ad slogan, from a travel agency located in the building at that time, posted in the Vancouver Sun classifieds."

New Indigenous Public Art Commissions

SFU Galleries launched two new Indigenous Public Art Commissions by Rain Pierre (sɬə́məxʷ) and Phyllis Atkins (q̓wɑti̓cɑ̓) at SFU Surrey. As the Gallery describes, these are part of a set of commissioned works "to acknowledge, honour and respect the unceded traditional territories of the south of the Fraser River First Nations where SFU’s Surrey campus is located." Works by SCA alumnus Roxanne Charles, Leslie Wells, and Easton Arnouse from Semiahmoo First Nation will complete the commissions later this year. More HERE.
