Shihab and Ivanochko are Guggenheim Fellows

Huge congratulations to the SCA's Nadia Shihab, who is one of the Guggenheim Foundation’s 2025 Fellows for Film-Video. Also on the list is SCA alumnus Sasha Ivanochko for Choreography. Terrific news! See all of the "198 Trailblazing Artists and Scholars Across 53 Fields," chosen rigorously from "a pool of nearly 3,500 applicants," in "The Guggenheim Foundation’s 100th Class of Fellows" HERE.

Chambers talks The Brutal Joy

The SCA's Justine A. Chambers is giving a talk about her work The Brutal Joy on Friday, April 18, 2025, at 5:30 PM at the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (50 8th St, Troy, NY), presented as part of the Ephemeral Organ Festival. More HERE.

Across Lands and Waters: CERC Spring Gathering

The SCA's Raymond Boisjoly is participating in the University of Victoria's Faculty of Fine Arts' "Across Lands and Waters: CERC Spring Gathering" on Thursday, May 1, 2025, which runs 1:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the Phillip T. King Arthur’s Night

The SCA's James Long served as producer on a unique documentary film, King Arthur’s Night, directed by John Bolton, which is screening as part of the 2025 DOXA Documentary Film Festival on Wednesday, May 7, at 7:30 PM at the VIFF Centre (1181 Seymour St, Vancouver), and on Thursday, May 8, at 10:00 AM in the Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema here at the SCA (149 W. Hastings St., Vancouver). The film features a cast of artists both with and without Down syndrome and is based on the large-scale theatrical production Long developed and directed in 2016. Eyes of The Beast

Neworld Theatre just completed a script workshop and reading of the Eyes of The Beast, a performance based on climate disaster testimonials gathered as part of Climate Disaster Project, coordinated by the University of Victoria’s Department of Writing. Content from the workshop will morph into CA 485, an intercession class run by the SCA's James Long, and result in a show in the Fei and Milton Wong Experimental Theatre in June, with students from across SCA participating. Sound and Vickers on the Sobey longlist

Great news! SCA alumni Michelle Sound and Charlene Vickers are both on the longlist, representing the Pacific region, for the 2025 Sobey Art Award. Here's hoping that this is the year that there's a tie for both this region and the whole prize! Congratulations to all of the longlisted artists, who you can meet HERE.

Johal's Indian Summer  

Am Johal, an Associate SCA Faculty Member, was announced as the curator-in-residence of the Indian Summer Festival. Great choice! More HERE from Stir Vancouver.

The Undesirables wins first

The Undesirables: a bestiary, a collaborative poetry book by Lisa Robertson and Myfanwy Macleod designed by Courtenay Webber (The Future) and edited by the SCA's Kay Higgins, won "first place" in the poetry category at the 2025 The Alcuin Society awards. 50 Greatest films Directed by Canadians

CBC Arts have shared their version of the "50 Greatest films Directed by Canadians," and – SPOILER! – The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open, Co-Directed by Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers and and SCA alumnus Kathleen Hepburn, is #30. If you haven't seen it, they also helpfully remind us that it's streaming on CBC Gem. See the whole list, with some snazzy illustrations, HERE.

Stir on Dance Nation

SFU's School of Communication, our partners in the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology, shared an interview with SCA alumnus Mariane Bourcheix-Laporte, who recently successfully defended their Communication PhD thesis on Artist-Run Centres in BC. Read it HERE.

Charles Slender-White is hosting "Countertechnique Vancouver," a Spring/Summer Workshop, from June 23 – 27, 2025, in our studios here at 149 W. Hastings St., Vancouver, hosted by Penelope Boyse. How much does it cost? Here are the details:

Vines' Tattoo Gathering

Vines Art Society, which was founded by SCA alumnus and Vines' Artistic Director, Heather Lamoureux, is hosting a "Tattoo Gathering with Indigenous artists, on April 26 & 27, 2025, from 11:00 AM – 9:00 PM at Vines Den (825 E Hastings St., Vanccouver), with all funds from "flash tattoos" going directly to Vines' Artist Survival & Healing Fund. The Frontliners

SCA alumnus Derek Chan 陳嘉昊 is directing Zahida Rahemtulla's The Frontliners, running May 1 – 11, 2025, at the Firehall Arts Centre (280 E Cordova St, Vancouver), which also has SCA alumni Jonathan Kim (Lighting Designer), June Hsu (Associate Sound Designer), Bernice Paet (Apprentice Stage Manager) Jamie Sweeney (Production Manager) behind the scenes. Presented in support of the show, Chan will also be facilitating a panel discussion, Expanding the Conversation: Reimagining Theatre Creation through Cultural Consultation, at 1:00 PM before the performance on May 4. SCA student Jack Adrian, and SCA alumni Garvin Chan 陳嘉泓, Cindy Kao 高慧欣, Christian Ching, Samantha Walters, Eve Middleton-Meyer, Liam Wilkins, Jordyn Wood, and Claire Brown are all participating in Rumble Theatre's Fool’s Paradise Cabaret, running April 26 & April 27, 2025, at 7:30 PM (doors at 7:00 PM) at Progress Lab (1422 William St., Vancouver). SCA alumnus Shion Skye Carter is doing a residence with L’AiR Arts at Atelier 11 in Paris, France, and will be giving an informal performance of Cobalt on April 26, 2025, followed by a post-show talk and Q&A. More HERE.
