Marks is a Guggenheim Fellow

Congratulations to the SCA's Laura U. Marks, who was just announced as one of the 2024 recipients of a Guggenheim Fellowship in the category of "Fine Arts Research" (see all of the 2024 recipients HERE). Specifically, Marks received the Fellowship for her proposed (but really ongoing) work, "Small Files for a Small World: Mitigating the Carbon Footprint of Streaming Video." We've collected a lot of Marks' work in this area on our site HERE. In related news, the Small File Media Festival, which presented its fourth iteration at Vancouver's The Cinematheque on October 20 & 21, 2023, also recently received significant funding from the Canada Council. Go big, get small! In more Marks news, participants in a Small File Media Workshop in February, 2024, lead by her and filmmaker James Chehab, are presenting their films on Monday, April 15, 2024, at 8:00 PM in the Theatre Beryte at Saint-Joseph University of Beirut (IESAV Damascus Street Sodeco Beirut, Lebanon). Oleksijczuk and team win Breaking Barriers Interdisciplinary Incentive Grant

The SCA's Denise Oleksijczuk was part of a team, including project lead Michelle Levy (SFU's Department of English) and Sheelagh Carpendale and Nicholas Vincent (from SFU's School of Computing Science), that received an SFU Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) Breaking Barriers Interdisciplinary Incentive Grant for their project, “Data Empowerment through Data Sharing in the Humanities.” Congratulations!

Gardiner⁠ and Tam⁠ work Sexy Laundry

The SCA's Kyla Gardiner⁠ (Lighting Designer) and SCA alumnus Nancy Tam⁠ (Sound Designer) are part of the "creative team" for Michele Riml's Sexy Laundry, which runs April 11 – May 12, 2024, on the Granville Island Stage (1585 Johnston St., Vancouver), presented by the Arts Club Theatre. More HERE.

Johal​'s Community Award

Am Johal​, who's an Associate Member of the SCA and the Director of SFU's Vancity Office of Community Engagement, received a Community Award from the Dr. Hari Sharma Foundation at their "South Asian Community 'Right to Vote' Annual Celebration" on April 6, 2024. Much deserved! More HERE.

Bayati in SLaM

SCA student Colleen Bayati is one of the participants in Boca del Lupo’s 2024 SLaM program, which "helps emerging ideas and artistic exploration progress to a solid foundation ready for project funding applications and final development." Congratulations, Colleen! More HERE.

Skoden 2024

Congratulations to Kathleen Mullen, Carr Sappier, and the hard (and fast!) working students of CA 389, all of whom together took on the challenging job of programing and producing the 2024 edition of the Skoden Indigenous Film Festival.

Honouring Indigenous Students Powwow

Upcoming from SFU First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Student Association:  

The First Nations, Métis & Inuit Student Association (FNMISA) is hosting our 2nd Annual “Honouring Indigenous Students” Powwow on April 20, 2024 in the West Gym at Simon Fraser University and we invite you to be part of this monumental event. This event is held to celebrate the end of the school year and honour Indigenous students, past and present. Our intention is to create a positive space on campus for representation and create opportunities for community connection. This intertribal event will be an opportunity for all to participate, interact, and learn more about the depth and beauty of Indigenous communities and cultures. All the organizing of this event is done by student volunteers.

In 2023, we attracted over 1,000 visitors, over 100 registered dancers, hosted 5 drum groups, 40 vendors, and more than 35 volunteers!
