We're excited to welcome Swiss dancer and choreographer Janyce Michellod as a 2023 Iris Garland Guest Artist, for which she's giving a free talk on the ethics in improvisational dance, presented in partnership with the Consulate General of Switzerland in Vancouver. As part of her residency, Michellod will also teach classes in improvisation and composition, ballet, injury prevention, and conditioning at the SCA, and be guest teaching for the Dance Center's Training Society Series.
Janyce Michellod is a dancer, performer, teacher, lecturer, herbalist. Trained first as a professional ballet dancer, Janyce graduated from the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste - TAZ (SBBS) and holds a Bachelor’s degree of performing arts from Codarts Rotterdam (Rotterdam Dance Academy). In 2006, she participated in the Daghdha Mentoring Program in Dance & Choreography in Ireland, that launched her long lasting research on movement, improvisation and instant composition. Janyce worked as choreographic assistant, rehearsal director and company teacher for Michael Klein and Colette Sadler. She has performed with the Zürcher Ballet, the National Ballet of Cuba, Daghdha Dance Company, Lastalaïca Productions. Her multidisciplinary body of work has been presented throughout Europe and supported by numerous institutions in Switzerland and abroad (2011-2018). In parallel, she developed Lastalaïca’s strategies, a methodology for improvisation and instant composition, leading masterclasses for professionals in France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany and Ireland (CND Paris Pantin, Tanzhaus Zürich, Micadanses Paris, TanzQuartier Wien, DanceHouse Dublin, Marameo Berlin, Dock11 Berlin, Tanzbüro Basel). Janyce is acting as an invited guest teacher in the disciplines of ballet, improvisation and composition for renowned universities and academies (Royal Conservatoire Antwerp, ACTS - Paris, PERA GAU, SEAD, HF ZUB Zürich, Stockholm University of the Arts, etc.) Licenced Herbalist since 2018, she is an advisor and lecturer in phytotherapy and herbalism.
