rEvolver Festival 2025

There is massive SCA participation in Upintheair Theatre's rEvolver Festival, including SCA alumni Zoë Braithwaite (Creator/Director/Performer), Jae Gonzales and TJ Tan (Performers), and Tamlin Vetter (Stage Manager) in The Mechanics of Intimacy; SCA alumnus Arthi Chandra as Director of Woman Against Gravity; and SCA alumnus Garvin Chan as both the Co-Creator/Co-Director/Translator for 羅密歐與茱麗葉 | Romeo & Juliet and Co-producer for The Yoko Ono Cult, all as part of the festival's Works in Progress Series. Also, the festival's Mainstage Performances include ButtHEAD, which has SCA alumni Jaewoo Kang as a Performer/Creator and Erika Mitsubishi as a Performer; and SCA Candy Van, a showcase of new work from SCA folks, including Viviane Wu's WORD VOMIT (with SCA students Wu, Camille Millar, and Inkara Julmagambetova as Performers and Video Design by SCA alumnus Kaila Bhullar); Katie Gherasim's Nostalgia and Nostalgia (with Gherasim, SCA alumnus Emma Ciprian, and Elie DeCorby as Performers, Music/Sound by SCA student Kai MacDonnell, Video Design by SCA alumnus Theo Badzio and SCA students Anastasia Shatska and Diana de Leyssac); and Ruby Maher's Output (with Maher and SCA students Czarina Agustines, Grace Byman, Gabrielle Comartin, Christina Evans, and Sara Van Gaalen, and Kira Cooper and Kaitlin Leitch). Chambers and Sachar collaborate for Indian Summer

In their first choreographic collaboration, the SCA's Justine A. Chambers and Simran Sachar are presenting Today is the evening to strike lightning / Aaj To Bijiliyan Girane Ki Shaam Hai on Saturday, July 5, 2025, from 7:30 PM – 9:00 PM at the Annex (823 Seymour St., Vancouver), presented as part of the Am Johal curated edition of the Indian Summer Festival, co-presented with the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival, and supported by Vancouver Civic Theatres and the Hari Sharma Foundation. Marks talks Enfolded Media

The SCA's Laura U. Marks gave the keynote talk, "Enfolded Media, from Glissant to Small Files," for the OPACITIES seminar, running May 6 & 7, 2025, in the Harry Clarke Lecture Theatre at National College of Art & Design, Dublin, convened by the Frugal Media Research Group. More HERE.

Wong in Dream Factory

Ming Wong, who was our Fall 2023 Audain Visual Artist in Residence, is presenting a "show-stopping stage installation" as part of Dream Factory: Cantopop Mandopop 1980s-2000, which opens May 28, 2025, at the Chinese Canadian Museum (51 E. Pender St., Vancouver). More HERE.

Smith inaugurates the 3rd Thursday

The SCA's Albert St. Albert Smith joins Tʼuyʼtʼtanat-Cease Wyss, Johanna Hauser, Lisa Cay Miller, and Themba Tana for the inaugural 3rd Thursday, a new improvised music series, on Thursday, May 15, 2025, from 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM at 8EAST (8 East Pender St., Vancouver). More HERE.

SCA alumnus Vanessa Goodman (Action at a Distance) was announced as the recipient of the annual Isadora Award from The Dance Centre, along with Eric Cheung, who received the biennial Iris Garland Emerging Choreographer Award. Congratulations! Find out more HERE.

Tremors 2025

SCA alumnus Howard Dai's Dream Machine is running as part of Rumble Theatre's Tremors Festival, which runs June 6 – 8, 2025, at Progress Lab (1422 William St, Vancouver BC). SCA alumni Jacob Zimmer (Collaborator for Christine Genier's Dear Star Trek), Brianna Bernard (Lightning Designer for Kern Albert & Donna-Michelle St. Bernard's Panoptikon), and June Fukumura (Dramaturg for Paige Louter's Nod) are also part of the programming, while Conor Wylie (Lead Producer), Christian Ching, and June Hsu (Venue Technicians) are part of the Festival Team. SCA judging BCSFF

With a jury of SCA film students, including Anastasia Shatska, Diana de Leyssac, Quinn Masselink, and Carissa Toledo, the British Columbia Student Film Festival, open to students from grades 8-12, is having its Awards Gala and Winning Film Screening on Saturday, May 24, 2025, from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM, in the Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema here at the School for the Contemporary Arts (149 W. Theatre Replacement announced SCA alumnus ellis cheadle as their 2025 COLLIDER Artist. As TR describe it, COLLIDER is "a project-centered incubator that provides key opportunities for experimental artists through mentorship, access to studio space, a commissioning fee of $5,000 as well as presentation opportunities in HOLD ON LET GO." Sloth Canon

The good folks at The Dance Centre asked us to shared about the upcoming world premiere of Sloth Canon, which they describe as "a thrilling new international creation by Vancouver’s Company 605 and Singapore’s The Human Expression (T.H.E) Dance Company which is inspired by the idea of building – and breaking apart." Company 605 Co-Director Lisa Gelley is a regular Sessional Instructor here at the SCA, and we're told SCA dance students Ashley Sankaran-Wee and Emily Lee were both interns during the creation of the work.
