MA, MFA, and PhD cohorts

Marks busy NYC sojourn

The SCA's Laura U. Marks is giving a lecture, "Cosmic Soul-Assemblages and Small-File Films," on September 28, 2023, at 7:00 PM at the e-flux Screening Room (172 Classon Ave., Brooklyn, NY). The day before, September 27, from 3:10 PM – 3:35 PM, she's talking about sustainable streaming practices at That Big TV Conference, which runs September 27 & 28 at NYC's Edison Ballroom (240 W 47th St.). Warmer Than The World Around Us

The SCA's Judy Radul is screening Warmer Than The World Around Us on Friday, September 15, 2023, at 7:00 PM at the Catriona Jeffries Gallery (950 E. Cordova St., Vancouver), along with videos by Andrew Yong Hoon Lee and Steven Cottingham. Take note: Limited capacity, register to attend HERE.

Darkroom of Educational Modernism

The SCA's Sabine Bitter and her longtime collaborator Helmut Weber are presenting Darkroom of Educational Modernism: On Form & Function, opening Thursday, September 14, 2023, at 7:00 PM and running to Saturday, January 20, 2024, at nGbK Berlin (station urbaner kulturen, Auerbacher Ring 41, 12619). Matreyek x 3

The SCA's Miwa Matreyek joined Akiko Nakayama and Rebecca Merlic for a discussion about their hybrid practices on Friday, September 8, 2023, at Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria. More HERE. Coming up, Matreyek is presenting Infinitely Yours and This World Made Itself on September 23 at 7:30 PM and participating in a panel discussion on September 24 at 1:00 PM at the ArtYard Live Animation Festival in New Jersey (13 Front St., Frenchtown). Finally, along with SCA alumnus Sammy Chien, she's performing as part of VIFF Live's Ironworks Series, which "invites four established resident artists to perform their innovative works in the exploratory and experimental framework of the iconic Ironworks venue [235 Alexander St., Vancouver]," on October 7 from 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM, curated by SCA alumnus Normal Armour. The SCA's Wladimiro A. Woyno Rodriguez is the Set & Lighting Designer for Someone Like You, which runs October 5 – 29, 2023, at the Newmont Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre (#203 – 162 W 1st Ave., Vancouver). More HERE.

Gardiner does The Tempest

The SCA's Kyla Gardiner is the Lighting Designer for Studio 58's production of The Tempest, which runs October 5 – 22, 2023, at Langara College (100 W. 49 Ave., Vancouver). More HERE.

Pauly​ and Egoyan in Montreal​

Launching their upcoming album on No Hay Discos​, the SCA's Mauricio Pauly​ and Eve Egoyan​ are performing November 13, 2023, in Montreal (more info to come!), presented by No Hay Banda​.

TPE plays Morlock

The Turning Point Ensemble, which has the SCA's Owen Underhill as conductor and Artistic Director, opens their 2023-24 season with a tribute concert for composer Jocelyn Morlock, who sadly passed this March, on September 22 & 23, 2023, at 7:30 PM at the Annex Theatre (823 Seymour St., Vancouver). Louder Actions

Alfred Jarry, the experimental duo of the SCA's Eldritch Priest and Brady Cranfield (that's me, the SCA's Communications agent), have released Louder Actions, which was recorded live by Andromeda Monk at Red Gate Arts Society on June 22, 2023, on Bandcamp. Listen HERE.

Nieto's Pop Up Dance

SCA alumnus Salome Nieto is performing on Saturday, September 23, 2023, at 12:00 PM, 1:30 PM, and 3:00 PM at Ron Basford Park at Granville Island, as part of New Works' Pop Up Dances. More HERE.

SCA alumnus Jessica McMann is having an album release party and concert for Prairie Dusk, "an eclectic mix of commissioned compositions and heart-touching originals," on October 29, 2023, from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM at Found Books & Shop (208 1st Street W., Cochrane, AB). More HERE.

Suddenly Slaughter

The Biting School’s (SCA alumnus Aryo Khakpour and Arash Khakpour) screening of Suddenly Slaughter (with SCA alumni Sharon Kahanoff, Laurel K. Brown, David Mesiha, Grace Mathisen, and Hamidreza Jadid behind the scenes) is having world premiere of at The Cinematheque (1131 Howe St., Vancouver) on October 10, 2023, at 7:00 PM. U's Introduction to AI Powered Digital Dance Creation + Stratum

SCA alumnus Sarah Hin Ching U is holding an Introduction to AI Powered Digital Dance Creation on September 16 & 17, 2023, from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM (ET) at the Dance Arts Institute (Unit 130 – 585 Dundas Street E., Toronto). SCA alumnus Hiro Kanagawa is participating in two events on Saturday, September 16, 2023 – "Forgiveness: From Novel to Stage" from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM in the Theatre and "Complex Relationships" from 2:30 PM – 3:30 PM in Room C400, both at UBC Robson Square (800 Robson St., Vancouver) – at the Word Vancouver Reading & Writing Festival, which runs September 8 – 23.

Stir on the Vancouver International Flamenco Festival

Here's Stir Vancouver on the Vancouver International Flamenco Festival, which includes SCA alumnus Jhoely Triana's Árboles (Trees) on Sunday, September 24 at 1:00 PM at the Picnic Pavilion at Granville Island (267 Old Bridge Walk). ReIssue news

ReIssue​, the art magazine edited by SCA alumnus and PhD student Casey Wei, is having a launch party for their ReIssue's Year 2 Anthology on Saturday, September 16, 2023, from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Open Space​ (510 Fort Street, 2nd floor, Victoria), presented as part of Small Press Fest. Before the launch, Wei joins Kim Dhillon and Kara Stanton for panel discussion and  Q+A from 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM. More HERE. Espace​'s Odours

Big Top Art School

Big Top Art School, a great project initiated and operated by Andrew Dadson and SCA alumnus Alex Tedlie-Stursberg, is a "free, low barrier, drop-in art school taking place under a pop-up tent at Oppenheimer Park field house," runs every Sunday from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM at Vancouver's Oppenheimer Park (400 Powell St., Vancouver).
