Yoon tours and talk

Vicki Kwon, Associate Curator of Korean Art & Culture at the Royal Ontario Museum, is holding a tour of the SCA's Jin-me Yoon's Scotiabank Photography Award exhibition on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at 6:00 PM at The Image Centre (33 Gould St., Toronto). Kwon is also holding a tour of the exhibition in Korean on Wednesday, July 19, as well. Yoon will also be in conversation with Euijung McGillis, Assistant Curator of the Photographs Collection at the National Gallery of Canada, on June 14 at 4:00 PM (EST) via Zoom. Marks and Kong on The Aesthetics of Small-File Cinema

The SCA's Laura U. Marks collaborated with SCA PhD student Yani Kong on the text, “You can’t look into my eyes.” The Aesthetics of Small-File Cinema, for Unthinking Photography, which is "an online platform produced by the digital programme at The Photographers' Gallery." Read it HERE.

Through My Lens and asses.masses in FOLDA

The fast upcoming 2023 Folda: Festival of Live Digital Art includes Through My Lens by Amy Amantea and the SCA's James Long (Theatre Replacement), which runs June 7 – 10 at various times in the Gordon Vogt Film Screening Room at the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts (390 King St. W., Kingston), and SCA alumni Patrick Blenkarn and Milton Lim's asses.masses on June 8 at 4:00 PM in the Power Corporation of Canada Studio Theatre, which is also in the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts. Shihab's Jaddoland and Familial(ar)

For folks in the USA (and those savvy internet users elsewhere), the SCA's Nadia Shihab's film Jaddoland is streaming for FREE on the WORLD Channel's America ReFramed. (And belated happy 100th birthday to Shihab's grandfather, who appears in the film.) More HERE. Also, if you're in Michigan, it's your last chance to catch Familial(ar) at the Anton Art Center (125 Macomb Pl, Mt Clemens), featuring work from the SCA's Nadia Shahib. 

TPE tour update

DOXA winners

With juries that included the SCA's Nadia Shihab (DOXA Feature Documentary Award) and SCA alumnus Jaewoo Kang (the inaugural Elevate Award), the 2023 DOXA Documentary Film Festival has announced this year's winners. Read the list HERE.

Saugstad and Raven Spirit Dance win

The Dance Centre announced SCA alumnus Anya Saugstad is the recipient of the biennial Iris Garland Emerging Choreographer Award, and the Raven Spirit Dance Society, which has SCA alumnus Starr Muranko as co-Artistic Director (with Michelle Olson) and SCA alumnus Jeanette Kotowich as an Artistic Associate, as the winner of the Isadora Award for Excellence in Choreography. Make rice balls and seed bombs with Art Action Earwig

Art Action Earwig 예술행동그룹 이어위그, the "multidisciplinary performance collective" of SCA alumni Minah Lee, Wryly Andherson, and Tadafumi Tamura, are holding a "rice balls and seed bombs" workshop (cook-shop?) on Friday, June 2, 2023, from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM, in the outdoor farm classroom at Nanaimo Foodshare Society's Park Avenue Farm (933 Park Ave.), presented in support of their exhibition Give Birth Love Tooth at the Nanaimo Art Gallery, which runs to June 25, 2023. Double book launch

Unit/Pitt Society for Art & Critical Awareness is holding a double book launch for ReIssue's Year 2 Anthology, which has SCA alumns and PhD student Casey Wei as editor, and a "Project Catalogue 2020–2022" for UNIT/PITT's I Spy… exhibition series on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at 5:00 PM at the Or Gallery's bookstore (236 E Pender St., Vancouver).

Stir on Ermacora and Johnson

Here's Stir Vancouver on SCA alumni Ryan Ermacora and Jessica Johnson's upcoming retrospective of solo and collaborative documentary shorts at The Cinematheque (1131 Howe St., Vancouver), as well as their 2022 feature Anyox and Sharon Lockhart's , which Ermacora and Johnson selected to screen, as well. Murao screens and curates

SCA alumnus Natalie Murao's film Blue Garden is screening at the Future of Film Showcase on May 18 at 7:15 PM at the Scotiabank Theatre Toronto (259 Richmond St. W), the Center for Asian American Media Festival on May 20 at 12:00 PM at the SFMOMA San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (151 3rd St.), and the Vancouver Short Film Festival on June 4 at 5:00 PM at the VIFF Centre (1181 Seymour St.). Also, Murao is the curator of おやすみ (oyasumi), a screening of of Japanese Canadian short films, including SCA alumnus Cindy Mochizuki's Amabie, which runs Thursday, May 25, 2023, at 7:00 PM at The Cinematheque (1131 Howe St., Vancouver), co-presented with the Powell Street Festival.

The Tyee and Stir on Happy Valley

Hill's M*****⁠ at the CAG

SCA alumnus Gabrielle L’Hirondelle Hill is opening her exhibiiton, M*****⁠, on May 25, 2023, from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM at the Contemporary Art Gallery (555 Nelson St., Vancouver), alongside openings for Sesemiya's s7ulh waḵáy̓stn iy ta stamsh cht and Dionne Lee's Ratios. All three exhibitions run May 26 – September 3. Also in support of their exhibitions, Hill, Lee, and Sesemiya are having a public conversation with SCA alumnus Lorna Brown on May 27 at 12:00 PM, and CAG Curator Godfre Leung is holding a tour on June 6 at 6:00 PM. Small File deadline!

The deadline for the 2023 Small File Media Festival is July 1, 2023. Crunch your stuff – maximum 1.44 MB – and submit! More HERE. Also, in good news / bad news, the Small File team is holding a free two-day workshop at The Cinematheque, who will be hosting the 2023 edition of the festival, on May 20 + 21, 2023, but it's already sold out! Alas!

Jardins sans murs / Gardens Without Walls

SCA alumnus Didier Morelli, taking over from Ji-Yoon Han, curated Jardins sans murs / Gardens Without Walls, "an online platform dedicated to presenting five performance videos made during the winter of 2023," including Rachel Echenberg, Kadi Lavoie-La, Pascale Théoret-Groulx, Cynthia G.Renard, and Eve Sage-t, for the Fondation Grantham for the Arts and the Environment. SFU Woodward's Artscape

The good folks in SFU Woodward's have a podcast, Artscape, where they talk to performers and groups they work with, like this episode featuring SCA alumnus Vanessa Goodman talking about Graveyards and Gardens, her collaborative work with Caroline Shaw, which SFU Woodward's co-presented with Music on Main this April. Voices of the Street Launch

Our friends and colleagues in SFU's Vancity Office of Community Engagement are co-hosting Megaphone's 2023 Voices of the Street Launch: Losing Hope, Finding Home on May 26 at 6:30 PM in the Djavad Mowafaghian World Art Centre here at SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts (149 W. Hastings St., Vancouver), featuring "heartfelt stories and readings from a handful of Voices of the Street writers, insight from community photographers, and a special poetry reading from Vancouver's Poet Laureate, Fiona Tinwei Lam." Coming Out of Chaos: A Vancouver Dance Story

Congratulations on winning the Award for Living Heritage at the City of Vancouver 2023 Heritage Awards to the team at Karen Jamieson Dance​ behind Coming Out of Chaos: A Vancouver Dance Story, "an archival research and oral history project that reflects on the collaborative performance work Coming Out of Chaos (1982) to unravel its influence and its place in the emergence of contemporary dance in Vancouver from the 1960s to the present day," which intersects with the early development of the dance department here at the SCA.
