The Inherit focuses on kudzu, an invasive plant species in the southern United States that people first brought from Southeast Asia over a century ago to combat man-made erosion. Today, the vine has become known for its aggressive spread, often overtaking large areas of land. Alongside its fictional elements, the film incorporates documentary-style footage from workshops held by the non-profit group Kudzu Culture. Based in the mountains of North Carolina, Kudzu Culture teaches the history of kudzu within human–nature stewardship and explores its potential as a resource for applications such as food and fabric.
