Organic Encounters – excerpts | 2026 (6:00 min)
In 2025, our team received further funding from SSHRC, an Insight Grant, to work on a new series of projects – Moving Matter: Organic Encounters – with a new lead artist and collaborator, Vancouver designer and educator Hélène Day Fraser, who co-created material matters with Keith Doyle at Emily Carr University. MM:OE is currently working with artists out of both SFU and Emily Carr, including visual artists, designers, dancers, and sound/media artists. This compilation of footage are excerpts of choreographic material we documented in April this year. A complete film is in process over the summer.

About Moving Matter
Moving Matter is an ongoing SSHRC Insight-funded research project that centres materials as guiding collaborative forces in the development of groundbreaking choreography, wearables, sound and material/object designs. We are attending to the creative potency that emerges from close interactions between moving/making human beings and moving/making matter. Our research asks: how can non-human or more than human materials be equal collaborators and what innovations emerge when we pay close attention to the dynamic, generative aspects of diverse materials, in a gesture that challenges our often human-centered approach to art making?
From 2022-25, Moving Matter has been led by interdisciplinary dance artist Rob Kitsos, in collaboration with designer/dance artist Meagan Woods, filmmaker Beau Han Bridge, and the music collective Westport Sunrise Sessions. With backgrounds in costume design, choreography and composition, our team of artists developed a methodology for material-led choreographic works, including short film, installation, and live performance.
