Tickets: Students: $10 // SFU Faculty, Staff & Alumni: $15 // Seniors: $15 // General: $20
Led by faculty members James Long and Kyla Gardiner, featuring the work created by their students, we bring you Common Monsters.
In the central square of a tiny town, everyone votes, everyone thrives, and everything is built on L.O.V.E. When a newcomer arrives, whose harmless habits don’t quite fit, divisions are drawn and factions form. Rooted in a year of research into theories of the monster, Common Monsters is a playful study of how we twist difference to serve ourselves.
For audience members who own fur suits, wearing them to the event is encouraged.
Cast and Directors
James Long | Docens Juvenilis
Standing 182.88 cm, with a weight that fluctuates 10–15% by season, James is normally found hiding in his third-floor cave, devouring over-priced egg salad sandwiches. Seethingly aggressive and smelling faintly of day-old rain gear, he craves control as quickly as it evaporates. He will scratch if provoked, and every six years he petitions his co-docens to shed his current qualifier for a new one. Considered useful, if a little dull.
Tamara Trbaric | Assistant Director
Tamara Trabaric, also known as The Thespian Fiend, stands at 5ft 4½, often standing tall with a permanent neck crane. Found with a pencil in her mouth, script in hand, and too many thoughts in her head, she observes, takes meticulous notes, then pounces with feedback. Fueled by one too many caffeinated drinks, she remains enthralled in the creative process. Her weakness is patience; forget your lines or blocking and expect a crumpled paper projectile. Previous sightings include The Fragile Mind (2026), Cringe Showcase of Aesthetics (2025), and Chicago (2022).
Matteo Giannetta | The Number Two Doctor
Matteo is often carrying around a sharp needle and thread. Hidden in the shadow he can be seen frothing at the mouth at the sight of any rip or cut. His diet consists of, but may not all include, blood, cotton clothing and all things dairy. When given time alone they may be heard mumbling the words of a Mr. Sondheim. Some previous generations of Doctor 2 appeared in productions of Spelling Bee, and Something Rotten.
Raha Fani Pakdel | The Cop
Native to the Iranian mountains, Raha can appear and disappear anywhere at any time. Average in size, she is highly adaptable and open-minded, allowing her to survive comfortably in almost any environment. Her diet revolves around dairy, with a particular weakness for ice cream. She is often observed performing important-looking tasks, though their purpose remainsunder study. Usually friendly when approached, she displays affection through repeated questioning...
Vincent Wang | The Dogmandog
WeiCheng (Vincent) Wang, a fourth-year SCA Theatre Performance student, cherishes grand, sumptuous, epic, tragically heroic theatricality. Exploring modernist avant-garde art across genres and disciplines, alongside queer theory, he has woven classical Chinese beauty, ritual, music and literary splendour into youth fast-fashion culture or avant-garde modernism collage-art and montage. In Common Monster, his Mandogman is an accidental outsider, alien to this world and community, struggling between human and canine identities. How will this monster seek belonging within the uncanny?
Tim Carlson | The Life Guard + Vigilantus Mundanea
An average height for a male of his species, he blends into the pack exhibiting fine features. Tim is keen to get to know everyone in the community to better observe any potential stranger danger. They enjoy drinking coffee to stay alert. It is believed that this creature reaches maturity and then leaves it's home for up to fifteen years before returning. Most importantly he is a father and is proud of his offspring.
Maryam Khosravi | The Number One Doctor
Maryam is often found backstage, staring into space or disappearing into her own imagination. Her diet consists of sweet treats and sushi. Usually quiet and observant, she rarely reveals what she is thinking. Some believe she can predict the future, but she is usually just overthinking what might happen next. Beware: she may vanish without warning when her social battery reaches zero.
Silken Lawson
Silken stands an average of 5'6 inches, and feeds mainly on smoke and open flame. When it catches the scent of a fire, it emits a high pitched and ear-splitting wail, and proceeds at top speeds to the burning site, paying no heed to the local speed limit. This creature lives in harmony with human beings, and it is good luck to leave out a bowl of smoked snacks and some cash for neighborhood local Vigil Ignis.
Milena Kalisch | The Pilot
Milena is an exceptionally ordinary creature, rarely observed without its spouse and is found inhabiting environments deemed sufficiently mundane such as grocery stores. It is docile and tirelessly boring. Even their Bestiary is painfully boring. Previous sightings include Simon Fraser University’s interdisciplinary student-led production, No Flesh Required, where the life form was credited as a writer. Further study is unnecessary; the creature is exactly what it appears to be, disappointingly unremarkable.
Anatole Fossourier | The Garbage Man
Anatole is a creature that horrifies everyone with his terrible smell, even though he is harmless and extremely essential to society but he is far too shy to show people who he really is. As a result, he lives a very lonely life. With his very short and skinny body, he can only be found at sunrise and sunset, eating all the garbage that was left behind. He has a strange preference for eating xylophones and HDMI cables.
Ryan Walsh | The Mayor
Ryan is a stout creature, weighing upwards of 0.84 metric tons. He tends to present as a good ol’ Berta boy, which he vehemently denies being despite evidence to the contrary (hair, clothes, vibe, etc). Take note of the broad shoulders, tiny legs, and lustrous dome. Rumors say that he has stalked the SCA for four years, often seen sitting in a corner wearing all black for blending purposes.
Mari Garate Cubillos | The Guru
This rare creature originates from the valleys of the South American mountain range of the Andes. Mari is often found lurking in dark caves listening to sad music that reflects the emotional void that is their soul. After years of not wanting to be blinded by bright lights this creature has decided to make their grand return to the stage. Will they regret it? Only time will tell.
Xzana Nesbitt | The Construction Worker + Construction operarium
If you don't belong, she tells you. She waits, her hands ready to help, her left steel tied tighter than the right. She feeds off adrenaline, gathers evidence, and never fails questioning authority, one curse at a time. Caution, if spotted balancing bodies on hazardous rigs, do not call her number, do not look for difference, do not move to amend the amendment. Her mouth is going to get tired, and her words are going to get deadly. Previous sightings of this council member include Undertow (Tsunami Circus 2026), Funky Funk (Live Acts Festival 2026) and Think of them when the water boils (Live Acts Festival 2026).
Esme Johnson | The Postie
Commonly found hunched over a laptop at midnight or debating whether arriving to the function thirty minutes early will look "too eager," Esme is a timid creature standing at just under 5'6". Although the beast is skittish, making capture difficult, researchers have discovered that the easiest way to freeze Esme on the spot is the task of writing a bio.
Indah Del Bianco | The Librarian
Indah can often be found under the cushioned seats of locomotives, or tucked beneath bus stop rain covers. Her ambient awareness is limited due to the noise-cancellation device permanently strapped to her head. Despite this creature’s unthreatening demeanor, disruption of her morning and nightly rituals will result in dangerous affective aggression. She has most recently been spotted in When is my body authentic? by Jaeden Walton, and undone by Sara van Gaalen.
Ben Brown | The Nurse (Performitivius Allyus)
Scholars argue it’s likely that Ben Brown originated in St. Albert, Alberta, though he will often claim he is from Edmonton, to achieve a more ambiguous past. Ben will reel his victims in by doing a bit, then will begin to torture his prey by running a bad joke into the ground. Take heed!!! His only known weakness is ice cream; this is because of his sweet tooth, and, notably, his lactose intolerance.
Kirill Fertsman (Kir) | Ballet Dancer
Ballet Dancer usually inhabits the spotlights. Whether he stands in the middle of the stage or hidden in the corner, he follows the light wherever it leads him. His head is always held unnaturally high, with his nose pointing toward the ceiling. He constantly stands on his tippy toes, wearing them down until his feet begin to bleed. His dietconsists entirely of freshly squeezed tears produced by his own eyes. The Ballet Dancer only needs to feed once a week to survive. However, due to his nature, he produces and consumes tears at least three times a week, even when feeding is unnecessary.
Loralei Teetzen | The Junior Guru
Loralei is often found backstage, crouched in darkness, rocking back and forth with a blanket wrapped around her shoulders, muttering her lines as she awaits the call of the stage lights. Her diet consists primarily of floor crumbs and peach-flavored Red Bull. Beware when she reaches her third Red Bull, at which point all backstage etiquette is abandoned. Previous sightings of this foul beast include Shrek the Musical (FVS) and The Moors (Douglas College)
Sarah Woodward-Kelen
Sarah Kelen is five feet, seven inches long. She is commonly found at Anytime Fitness exercising her demons in preparation to overpower the weak. Myth claims she is a shapeshifter, disguising herself in “plays” such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer the Musical (KIA Productions) and Metamorphoses (United Players). She co-created Fates Festival (Promethean Theatre/Arts Club Youth Committee), escaped Studio 58 with a diploma, and currently serves as President of Promethean Theatre.
calliope chen | The Baker
calliopeia loves to bake. cupcakes, muffins, blueberry muffins, chocolate chip cookies, lemon cookies, streudels, eclairs, cream puffs, donuts, lemon squares, shortbread, gingerbread, banana bread, scones, cheddar scones, brownies, cake, birthday cake, cheesecake, bundt cake, apple pie, cherry pie, lemon pie, coconut pie, macarons, macroons….
Jullia Piekh | The Cleaner Lady
Yuliia Piekh is a 166-centimetre passionate creature, first spotted somewhere between Kyiv and Vancouver. Once trained in the ancient discipline of gymnastics, she now survives on yoga, hiking, and dramatic wandering. She can be found photographing mountains, wandering through forests, or pretending to be a normal human on theatre stages. Myths say she escaped the war in Ukraine, crossing an ocean with only her camera, stubborn eyes, and a pocketful of forest magic. Once encountered, she might cleanse your soul to death.
Production
Adam Smith | Lead Sound Designer | Sonus Anthropus
Sonus Anthropus come in all shapes and sizes and can be found globally, building nests in any space big enough for their gear. As they grow their collection of sonic machinery, they leave their home in search of larger accommodations. Recently, a Calgarian variety has been spotted in "Vancouver", working on The Messhall (Taha Seraei), GIVE US A SMILE (Maddy Woodley), and The Right Thing to be Doing (Sarah Finn).
Vania Ming Yui Ngok | Production Manager
Vania Ngok is often found backstage or in the tech booth, figuring things out. She loves live shows and is a fangirl who loves K-pop and Thai dramas. She survives on matcha lattes and her favourite snack, House Tongari grilled corn. Vania is usually friendly and easy-going. She has been involved in Ascension, Live Acts Festival, and Ballet Vancouver. Please approach her with kindness, and you might become really good friends!
Kady Brandel
Kady Brandel is most commonly found where the smell of rubberized cables seeps through the air and sunlight cannot shine through the drapes. A mostly docile creature until her caffeine supply runs short, she finds herself happiest up high in the runabout, which is the closest she will get to growing actual wings. This creature can most commonly be found sporting some outrageously coloured hair, which she often alters in the freakishly late hours of the night.
Rafael Medrano | Assistant Technical Director
Anxious yet energetic, Rafael exhibits friendly behaviour much similar a golden retriever, yet appearing small, almost otter-like. Rafael identifies as a shapeshifter male, using He/They/It pronouns. Often times, you will find it in their natural habitat; the computer room. As the only existing creature of his species, the overthinking subject habitually games. So far, this creature's lifespan extends to nineteen years and counting, with a diet consisting of sour cream and onion chips.
Cheryl Hsu | Video/Projection OP
Cheryl Hsu is often found in the booth at the tech table, excited and stressing about her show while hugging her black Owala water bottle, and playing with her mini purple Needoh while going through her ques. So far, this creature has been on this planet for 18 years and turning 19 on November 4th. She’s often seen snacking on some sort of bread and a choice of iced tea. Beware, when she’s nervous she would not want to socialize.
Nicole Wong | Sound Operator
Nicole Wong is an elusive nocturnal creature most commonly spotted prowling near the sound console, her ears perked for stray frequencies. Highly territory-protective over her audio board, she survives on iced coffee and goldfish crackers. While generally docile, she will hiss if anyone touches her faders mid-cue. Sightings are rare as she slinks through the dark using purr-level acoustics to blend into the shadows.
Kat Anderson | Assistant Stage Manager
Kat Anderson is often found creating different projects or crafts, hanging with friends, or eating snacks. This is the first sighting of this creature at this location.
Marianne Benoit-Gagnon | Design Lead
Marianne Benoit-Gagnon is an unusually ancient specimen who can be easily identified by the enormous backpack permanently attached to her body. She is drawn to bright colourful lights, especially those emanating from projectors, and is frequently found hunched over a drawing or attempting to make something appear on a screen. Though she is generally harmless, approach with caution if she hasn’t been able to sleep sufficiently, which is most of the time during the school year.
Yuanyuan Liu | Assistant Stage Manager
Yuan is most likely to be found in the darkness. Inside the stage curtain or at the corner of backstage. Yuan has been alive for 19 years and yes, is still single. Her diet depends on her financial status, and she can become aggressive or weirdly quiet when she is out of energy. Also, Yuan’s online presence is very different than offline, be cautious if you spot her accounts.
Angelina Wang | Assistant Stage Manager
The common Angelina Wang is a skittish creature, standing at 5’7” but appearing shorter due to her posture resembling that of a shrimp’s. Though sightings of this elusive beast have been few, field studies have found success luring her from the stage curtains utilizing shiny trinkets and warm tea. Local hearsay claims that within an Angelina Wang’s den is a hoard filled with countless colourful baubles and artistic scraps.
Amelia Chong | Stage Manager
Amelia is a friendly creature of small stature, though don't let her size fool you as she is rarely short on energy. With an allergy to sitting still, she always manages to find something to do. She has been spotted lurking in the backrooms of many SCA productions, including SPEC: P&D Showcase, Ascension, and When Is My Body Authentic?. But save yourself the trouble of looking for an Amelia; she’ll find you.
Ayessa Macalling | LX Operator
Ayessa Macalling may be hard to find, standing at only 5’1” (the extra inch is important). This small creature is often mistaken for a child due to her baby face, but she’s been in this world far longer than most think. Her diet consists primarily of matcha, which she will choose regardless of the alternatives. Generally harmless, she may occasionally be spotted breaking into KATSEYE choreography without warning. Despite rumours, she is not, in fact, a child.
Irene Lin | Assistant Stage Manager
I might seem intimidating to people who don’t know me, but once you get to know me, you’ll see that’s not the case. You might spot me in every corner of the theater—maybe helping the stage manager or adjusting the lights. Or maybe I’m just hiding off to the side, trying to find something to do and munching on cookies. First time here; hope it's not the last time
Regina Xu | Assistant Stage Manager
Regina Xu is a quiet backstage creature, most commonly found lurking in the wings with a pencil, a notebook, and an alarming awareness of everything happening around her. While sometimes mistaken for timid, she actually enjoys being around a few trusted creatures, where she can freely turn little details into creative ideas. She is naturally drawn to stories, movement, images, and making things with her hands, especially wherever creativity is encouraged.
Sarah "Sarv" van Wouw | Design Team
Have you ever met a Sarv in your life?
Sarv is in the air.
Sarv is in your minds.
Sarv is in your heart.
Sarv will find you.
You will become Sarv.
And we will take over Earth.

Stefanie Infantino | Creative Team
Stefanie Infantino is most often spotted in the wings of a dimly lit theatre, surrounded by hot glue, tape, and props. A rare multidisciplinary creature, she studies Performance Production & Design and is happiest building things with her hands. Approach with snacks. Previous sightings include LIAM (Exquisite Pressure), The Baking Show (Ruby Slippers Theatre), and Epigone (Electric Theatre Company).
Miranda Collard
Mirandus Brassica oleracea – known commonly as Miranda Collard – is a long-haired folkloric beast, often found in neurotic discussion with her computer, creating over-engineered visual design systems. Originating in the Appalachian Mountains, this cryptid was transplanted to Coast Salish territory. Scientists have found the Miranda Brassica oleracea adapted well to the Pacific Northwest ecosystem and is generally considered a docile and solitary creature. Though, she can exhibit sizeable fits of hostility indiscriminately when spooked. Despite this sensitive temper, the Mirandus Brassica oleracea is a reliable companion once she has developed familiarity.
