Making Macbeth

Negotiating Agency and Aesthetics in Mixed-Ability Creative Spaces

WHAT IS MAKING MACBETH?

A research-creation project exploring how a mixed-ability ensemble, including artists with intellectual, developmental, physical and sensory disabilities, can create performance together in ways that centre agency, access and collaboration. Using Shakespeare’s Macbeth as a creative starting point, an ensemble of creator-performers will experiment with text, movement, sound, lighting and video while exploring new approaches to collaborative performance-making. The project asks what becomes possible when difference is not something to accommodate, but something that helps shape the creative process itself.

WHAT WE ARE EXPLORING

Creative Process

How can mixed-ability ensembles develop new ways of creating performance together?

Agency & Access

How can creative processes support meaningful participation, decision-making and artistic agency across different abilities?

Performance

How might a wider spectrum of ability change the aesthetics, structures and possibilities of live performance?

Audiences

How do audiences experience disability and difference on stage, and how might mixed-ability performance challenge assumptions about representation and spectacle?

FOLLOW THE PROCESS

Making Macbeth will unfold through conversations, studio workshops, design experiments, public knowledge sharing and the ongoing development of a new performance inspired by Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
