Skoden in the news

The 2022 Skoden Indigenous Film Festival (SIFF) was covered in The Georgia Straight! Read all about it HERE.

There are two ways to see the festival. One is to catch the Skoden Sampler on March 31, 2022, at the Prospera Credit Union Theatre at SFU's Surrey Campus (13450 102 Ave Unit 110, Surrey), and the other is to catch the complete Skoden Indigenous Film Festival run on April 1 & 2, 2022, at the Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema here at SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts (149 W. Hastings St., Vancouver). But if you're really keen, you could go to everything! Architek Percussion sell out!

Wow! Music on Main's presentation of Architek Percussion on Tuesday, March 29, 2022, featuring a "world premiere of an epic new piece" titled Stircrazer I by the SCA's Sabrina Schroeder (who's also Music on Main's Composer in Residence), is SOLD OUT! Daniel talks Fitting (Out-Fitting) In

The SCA's Dr. Henry Daniel is giving a talk, Fitting (Out-Fitting) In, for the Centre for Culture, Identity and Education at UBC, on Tuesday, March 29, 2022, from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM, drawing from his essay with the same title from the book Nuances of Blackness in the Canadian Academy: Teaching, Learning, and Researching While Black (University of Toronto Press, 2022), edited by Awad Ibrahim, Tamari Kitossa, Malinda S. Latta and Talijančić's TRACES

The SCA's Erika Latta and her collaborator Ivan Talijančić's company WaxFactory presented a preview of TRACES, their "newest immersive, site-specific work in the making," developed in collaboration with Rachel Jendrzejewski. Find out more about TRACES HERE.

Dickinson's At the Speed of Light

The SCA's Peter Dickinson's new audio play At the Speed of Light, presented by Pi Theatre, is "on the air." Head over to Pi Theatre's website to grab some PWYC tickets and start listening!

Saugstad & Friends in Open Stage #2

SCA alumnus Anya Saugstad is presenting "a filmed excerpt of Paper Mountains (of Memory)" on Sunday, April 3, 2022, as part of Open Stage #2 at The Dance Centre, featuring performances by SCA alumni Eowynn Enquist and Shion Skye Carter, plus Daria Mikhaylyuk, Nasiv Sall, and Sabine Raskin, with music by SCA alumnus Stefan Nazarevich. SCA alumnus Laiwan moderates Erasures: Cultural Activism and Periodicals, a virtual panel discussion with her former collaborators Frederick Thomas Edwards, John Kozachenko, and Joyce Jenje Makwenda on March 31, 2022, at 12:00 PM, co-presented by the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery and the Western Front. Andreyev and Overstall's EPIC_Tom ++

The SCA's Stefan Smulovitz and SCA PhD student Simon Overstall are part of the ace group of players (also including Julie Andreyev, Adrian Avendaño, Marina Hasselberg, Giorgio Magnanensi, and Anju Singh) performing Andreyev and Overstall's EPIC_Tom ++, which "features three works of live musical improvisation and generative media from Julie Andreyev and Simon Overstall’s multispecies projects with dogs, crows, and forest communities." Co-presented by Vancouver New Music and Emily Carr University of Art + Design, EPIC_Tom ++ runs on Saturday, May 7, 2022, at 7:30 PM at ECU's Integrated Motion Studio (520 E 1st Avenue, enter from Carolina Street). Wei's Kamikaze Nurse get signed

Watch SCA alumni Michelle Sound, Ghinwa Yassine, and Xinyue Liu, and current SCA film student Ogheneofegor Obuwoma, as well as incoming SCA MFA candidate Taryn Walker (as host) in a series of conversational videos following up their participation in the exhibition Response: Soft Action that ran at The Polygon Gallery from January 26 – February 6, 2022. Check out this upcoming concert of "solo performances on Vancouver’s largest pipe organ," with Sarah Davachi and SCA alumni George Rahi and Stefan Maier, who's also an instructor in our Music & Sound area. Medd's Dreaming Climate Consciousness

SCA alumnus Evan Medd is running Dreaming Climate Consciousness, an online workshop that aims to foster "creative collaboration to make narratives that exist in dialogue with the unfolding realities of climate change." Chien and MacCaull do visuals, Carter's THE KILN PROJECT screens

SCA alumni Sammy Chien and Caroline MacCaull produced the visuals for Garden City Electronic Music Society and the Active / Passive Performance Society's presentation of Alanna Ho & Mustafa Rafiq on Saturday, March 18, 2022, at the South Hall on Galiano Island. Also on the bill was a screening of THE KILN PROJECT, a dance film by SCA alumnus Shion Skye Carter and filmmaker Brenda Kent Colina, with music by Prince Shima, which was produced as part of the Dance West Network’s PIVOT: Digital Collaborations, presented by Active / Passive and supported by the LEÑA Artist Research & Residency Centre.
