Abahmed wins!

Congratulations to soon-to-be SCA alumnus Alex Abahmed for winning the Dean's Undergraduate Convocation Medal, which will be awarded to him at the upcoming SFU Convocation ceremony. Abahmed is a Vancouver based composer and audio engineer with an extensive background as a multifaceted film technician (IATSE Local 891). He's produced music for film and theatre and also interned with the SCA's Mauricio Pauly. While completing his studies at the SCA, he composed music for several student productions, including ASCENSION 2021 and most recently Ghost Forest. Outside of school, his CV includes work for a number of projects and clients, both local and international. Congratulations, Alex!

SCA at Open Ears

SCA alumnus George Rahi will be presenting Music for the Augmented Pipe Organ (more HERE) and A Wake of Vultures, the "project-based interdisciplinary performance collective" of SCA alumni Nancy Tam, Daniel O'Shea, and Conor Wylie, will be presenting Tam's Walking at Night by Myself and …wreckage upon wreckage… (more HERE) as part of Kitchener's Open Ears Festival of Music & Sound, which runs June 2 – 5, 2022. Joining the Vultures' crew for the shows are SCA alumni Anjela Magpantay, Ira Jordison, Paul Paroczai, and Charlie Cooper.

Ybarra at Griffin

SCA alumnus Faune Ybarra is Griffin Art Projects' new Public Programming and Residency Coordinator. Congratulations – and great choice!

Vanden Heuvel does BODYTRAFFIC

Redvers' red carpet slight

Good grief! SCA alumnus and filmmaker Kelvin Redvers was initially "turned away from a red carpet screening at the Cannes Film Festival for wearing moccasins with his tuxedo." Telefilm Canada and the Indigenous Screen Office (ISO), who "called on Cannes to update its red carpet fashion policy, offering to provide more information on Indigenous attire," had to step in. More HERE.

Kanagawa and Friesen up for Leos

Alongside co-star Carmen Moore, SCA alumnus Hiro Kanagawa was nominated for a 2022 Leo Award for his performance in Luvia Petersen's short film iDorothy. And SCA alumnus Suzanne Friesen was also nominated for a Leo Award for Best Cinematography for her work on Elizabeth Lazebnik's Be Still. Congratulations!

Khakshoor programs Iranian Experimental Film

SCA alumnus Somayeh Khakshoor was the was the guest programmer for Iranian Experimental Film, Part 1: The Artistic Radicals, an evening of "radical, experimental Iranian short films made between 1964 and 1988" at The Cinematheque on May 25, 2022. More HERE.
